History and activities of the Gyula Szepes Cultural Centre

The Cultural Centre was opened in 1972 and was designed by Attila Emődy and Miklós Vukovich. The building, with its hard geometric lines and clean massing, exuding a traditional atmosphere, was perhaps the first to attempt to combine modern and traditional architecture. Clubs and professional groups that had been established earlier, such as the Fine Arts Circle and the Bukovina Szekler Folk Choir, found a home in the newly inaugurated building and have been operating ever since, together with other new clubs and artistic groups.

The aim of the institution is to organise community and cultural events for the local community.

In 2004, the institution took over the name of Gyula Szepes, a painter of the landscape of Érd, who was the leader of the Artists' Circle for decades.

Artistic groups and various communities are an important part of the cultural centre's activities. It is a centre for meetings of amateur artists. Exhibitions and shows help them to develop their art and give them the opportunity to meet the public. Talent development and nurturing programmes provide artistic development opportunities for children and young people. Choirs, dance ensembles, recreational, collecting and hobby clubs, as well as environmental and creative workshops, welcome those interested in a particular area of culture and who enjoy participating in the life of a community.

Since 1996, the residential area has been home to the Weaving Workshop, which welcomes lovers of weaving as a craft and of natural materials.

The varied and enjoyable annual programmes are deservedly popular in the town and the region. Exciting exhibitions, entertaining and valuable theatre performances and lecture evenings enrich the artistic life of the city.

The Cultural Centre hosts an exhibition of amateur artists from Érd and the region, the biannual Mustra exhibition and the You Can Be a Star!
