The building, designed by architects István Balogh and Gizella Ligeti, has been serving culture in Gyöngyös since 1978. It has been a cultural centre for the city and the surrounding area, and also serves as a theatre. The foyer is decorated with a stained glass window by Gábor Szinte depicting historical events in the town of Gyöngyös. The theatre has a capacity of 468 seats, a chamber hall for 200 people, five club rooms, a ballet hall and other service facilities, and a full range of event services. It offers free Wi-Fi Internet access and a Digital Wellbeing Programme Point, which provides a free service to help people develop basic digital skills. In February 2019, the energy modernisation of the Mátra Cultural Centre started. The investment of more than 300 million HUF consisted of three main parts. In the first phase, the building received external thermal insulation, followed by the renewal of the façade and the renovation of the ventilation system in the theatre hall. In 2021, the installation of a complete smoke and fire alarm system began.
