The heroes of the book move in a specific intersection of society, where Hungarian literary representation does not set foot - besides being Roma, they are also members of the LGBTQ+ community. The Roma collective Ame Panzh noticed this omission, and after the publication of The Awakening Book in 2023, they felt it was crucial to help create an anthology in which the hitherto unseen human fates could find a place.

There is no literary tradition of depicting LGBTQ+ Roma in the country, but the narrative representation of Roma and LGBTQ+ people goes back a long time. These foundations, however, are mostly worth breaking down and are not suitable for building on to create new representations of the meta-group. The works in this volume were produced in a collaborative way: the writers invited to participate worked closely with the characters in their stories, who shared their experiences and thoughts. These real-life experiences formed the basis of the stories, rather than the well-established, readily available minority representation schemes or panels of cultural policy discourse.

From 15-23 November 2024, you can take home a free copy of These Roma Are Queer from Bura. During this time, the gallery will create a dialogue with the book through a pop-up exhibition of works by contemporary Roma and queer artists.
