Mary Stuart
Friedrich Schiller: Mary Stuart
Based on the translation by László Kálnoky, the script was adapted by Júlia Sándor and István Péter Nagy.
Two queens. Elizabeth I (Tudor) on the English throne, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, imprisoned under her rule. Allies, relatives, enemies. There are two of them, but neither the English throne nor the hearts of men can accommodate both. The prison is tight, the accusation false, the verdict fatal. Rank imposes obligations, the people demand, and interests compel. One must die, the other must kill. Everything seems decided, yet anything could still change: this is the moment before the end.
In a world created by men, where the ruthless butcher-shop logic of political power dominates all, two women confront each other—and in their struggle, liberty faces tyranny. But can freedom ever triumph over oppression? Two queens on opposing sides. One breaks under the system; the other bends to fit within it.
