Is there still a place for dance in times of such devastation? How can we show solidarity in an age of dehumanisation and disinformation? What makes art a political tool? Is it activism or propaganda? Is sound a weapon or just another product to be sold? Is this music safe? What remains of what was once a dangerous countercultural force, now reduced to an entertainment spectacle?

Just listen. Struma+Iodine from Vienna and EXILES label present a radical music show...

SAINT ABDULLAH & EOMAC:

The two brothers Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh grew up in the West, separated from their Iranian families. Their project Saint Abdullah interweaves industrial dub and sound samples from Shia Islam, an overheated, restless but caracan blend of sacred and profane sounds.

Eomac, aka Ian McDonnell, is an Irish producer and DJ, half of the duo Lakker, whose work has graced the catalogues of Trilogy Tapes, Bedouin Records, Stroboscopic Artefacts and Phantom Limb, and is also the head of the Eotrax label.

Together with Eomac, they are engaged in a unique artistic dialogue along their ever-expanding sonic heritage and musical vocabulary. The field recording samples are often personal, not mere decorative elements, sometimes appearing unexpectedly and carambolically in sudden upsurges of vocal patterns, or even in epileptic bursts of heavy beats.

Their sound challenges cultural perceptions and expectations of diasporic narratives. Their collective music is released on Planet Mu, Drowned By Locals and Nicolas Jaar's Other People label, among others.

ROJIN SHARAFI:

Rojin Sharafi is a Vienna-based, Tehran-born sound artist and performing electroacoustic composer. He creates completely unique musical textures using analogue, acoustic and prepared instruments, as well as digital instruments of his own development. He is currently pursuing his Master's degree in composition and sound engineering at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts.

His debut album, Urns Waiting to be Fed (Zabte Sote), has been praised as "one of the most exciting and original musical creations of 2019". His second album, Zangaar, was released in 2020. Sharafi has been involved in numerous collaborations and co-productions in film and dance. Her work has appeared in festivals and exhibitions around the world, from Sheffield to Riga, Budapest, New York and Washington DC. She is a SHAPE 2020 Artist-in-Residence and a recipient of the 2018 Austrian Women Composers Award.

TELESPORT x ABDX:

Péter Márton, aka TELESPORT is notorious for his DIY modular soundscapes and thundering techno improvisations. He is co-founder of Davoria sound system, teaches workshops at the Department of Electronic Music and Media Arts at the University of Pécs, is an electroacoustic drone artist under the name Prell, and is forever writing an unfinished piece for the piano. This time, together with the Mexican visualler Rodrigo Guzman, they are stirring up an AI-supported hard techno vortex.
