The Kingdom of Dahomey was founded in West Africa in the 17th century and became a French colony in the 19th century. In 2021, twenty-six of the royal treasures were returned to their original home in Cotonou, Benin. The objects included King Ghezo, the lion-man Glele, the shark-man Behanzin and the protective statues of Bochio, all of great importance to the locals. The earlier removal and return of the treasures sparked a heated debate about the identity of the citizens. Using a unique narrative form, director Mati Diop confronts the audience with questions that are much more universal than they first appear.
