Introduction to Cryptozoology
“Cryptozoology is a discipline unrecognised (yet!) by the academic(?) sciences(?). Investigates animals/creatures whose existence has not been proven (yet!).
“For three years, we have been researching local creatures, our Hungarian cryptofauna. They emerged from desolate landscapes, from the collective and individual unconscious: Werewolf of Putnok, Yeti of Mátranovák, hydrovampire of Kömörő, Istók Hany and sirens from the Horrid Valley. We watched them and they stared back at us.
Chasing a thing that evades us constantly? We did! In our research-based art project, immersed in the character of the obsessive cryptozoologist, in photographs, text, word of mouth, media hacks and field expeditions, we sought the creatures' proximity.”
Schedule
The first exhibition of photographer Márton K. Takács and poet Soma Kazsimér will open in the framework of the Budapest Photo Festival 2023, which brings together the various works of the past years. There is a fine line between the real and the imaginary, the scientific and the speculative, the documentation and the fine art, or the field diary and the poem. We have to get into a green Suzuki to figure out when our eyes glaze over and when they don't. But even if we have to rub our eyes and tilt our heads to the side, crouch to collect samples in the muddy leaf litter, switch on a wildlife camera or read Szabolcs online, we promise the horizon will soon be more apparent.
