Frodo (Elijah Wood), the young hobbit, receives a ring from Bilbo, which turns out to be the One Ring that will enslave the people of Middle-earth to the Dark Lord. Gandalf (Ian McKellen) sends Frodo to Rivendell, where Elrond, the wisest of the Elves, will decide the fate of the Ring. With no other choice, the Ring must be destroyed in Mordor, in the End of Days. At the Council of the Freemen, the Fellowship is renewed, and under the leadership of Gandalf, Frodo and his companions, Aragorn the Dúnedain (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas the Elf (Orlando Bloom), Gimli the Dwarf (John Rhys-Davies), and Boromir, representing the Men, set out on a hopeless quest. The future depends on the fate of the alliance.
