In every family, there are odd characters, odd cousins with whom we are reluctant to sit down for Sunday lunch. In every family, there are sensitive issues, misunderstandings left unsaid, grievances nurtured for decades, and silences. István Tasnádi's play Cardboard Dad is set in such an ordinary family. Károly invites his sister Eva to lunch. The two families sit down at the table in a huddle. They discuss breastfeeding on demand, holidays together in Szomboszló, psychiatry, and slowly everything falls apart: marriage, parent-child relationships. This is where the great freedom leads! I wonder where Daddy Cardboard is delayed in getting his house in order?
