Wim Wenders and Ry Cooder have known each other for 20 years. Cooder has composed music for films such as Paris, Texas and The End of Violence. During their latter collaboration, Cooder often gushed about his trip to Cuba, where he recorded with some old, forgotten Cuban musicians. The album was released as Buena Vista Social Club, sold millions of copies worldwide and won a Grammy Award. Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba again in early 1998 to record a solo album with Ibrahim Ferrer, one of the musicians of Buena Vista Social Club. He was accompanied on this trip with a small film crew by Wim Wenders, who filmed their work in the studio and their daily life in Havana. The filming continued in Amsterdam, where the musicians played two concerts, and ended in New York in the summer with a triumphant performance at the legendary Carneige Hall.
