Organized by the House of Music Hungary and Lumen Café / Prepost Records, this year-long program aims to provide regular performance and networking opportunities for students of music institutions.

The series also strives to encourage collaboration and fluid exchange between different musical disciplines and institutions, from secondary-level conservatories to university departments. A professional jury has supported and continues to support the students’ work throughout the season.

The name “Kipakolás” (literally “Unpacking”) was borrowed from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts’ annual year-end exhibition, where students “unpack” their work for public display — giving peers, teachers, and visitors a glimpse of what each of them has created over the year.

We aimed to establish a similar tradition at Lumen Café: a recurring showcase for music students, where they can perform for each other and a broader audience in an open, quarterly concert format — not only representing their schools but inspiring interaction and musical cross-pollination between institutions.

In the first year of the program, the Bartók Béla Conservatory held several jazz club events. Students from the University of Pécs Faculty of Music and Visual Arts and the Liszt Academy’s Electronic Music and Media Arts program presented fully improvised sets as mixed duos. Some Jazz Department students also joined them on stage, creating hybrid performances. Toward the end of the season, the Folk Music Department of the Liszt Academy also joined with a showcase concert.

The program proved to be a great success: we organized 9 concerts throughout the season — many of them fully packed, with audiences even overflowing from the Lumen concert hall.

We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both students and teachers. The series has become an important and inspiring experience for all involved — so we’re thrilled to continue it next season, aligning with the academic year and our upcoming concert season.

Our plans include expanding the series to include even more institutions and departments, and encouraging further experimentation and musical dialogue between students of diverse backgrounds and approaches.
