Comic book festival: Comics/Society Workshop

Comics in high school and university; dealing with the silenced past in comics; portraying taboo subjects in concrete and abstract ways - just three of the topics that will be covered in the Comics/Society workshop discussions. Everyone is welcome!

16:00-17:00 Comics/Talk

There are teachers who use comic books to deliver their curriculum, and others who teach specifically about comics - whether their audience consists of fifth graders or college students. What drives them? Why and how can comics be used in the classroom?

In the Comics/Education roundtable, Lilla Gregor, PhD student at the University of Debrecen, will be interviewed by Éva Áder, a secondary school teacher, Katalin Orbán, an ELTE teacher, and Kristóf Szalay, who wrote a German language book in comic book form.

17:30-18:30 Difficult/Heritage

The autobiographical comic strip Insects explores and depicts the Nazi past, family traumas and everyday aggression through a variety of visual means. Authors Leopold Maurer and Regina Hofer will be interviewed by András Greff. The interview will be held in English.

Insects will be available for purchase at the festival, courtesy of its publisher, Nero Blanco Comix.

19:00-20:00 Tört/én/elem - Historical traumas in comics

Sándor Trippó and Eszter Szép, comics researchers, will be in conversation with András Greff about the portrayal of taboos, historical events and international comics trends.
