This stork is WHITE and

That stork is BLACK.

They hardly agree:

one of them eats frog, the other prefers fish.

one of them lines the nest with slushy moss,

the other with dry grass.

One of them would chatter all day,

but for the other silence is the most precious treasure.

But they love that they are different.

They became home for each other.

But what about this little stork?

He’s too black to be white

And too white to be black.

He’s GREY. The one and only.

What’s going to happen with him?

Things aren’t just black and white.

In the summer of 2023 it was first observed and documented that a white and a black stork became a couple in Lüdern, Lower Saxony.

Despite the fact that the lifestyle of white and black storks are completely different they chose each other – despite their otherness or maybe because of that. Adapting to someone else can be challenging even if we resemble each other. And if we don’t, the situation is even more complicated. Whatever the setting is, we always have to seek for understanding and empathy. By getting closer to each other we are able to peek into undiscovered, gripping worlds.

The nuptial of the white and the black stork results in a new species. The ’grey stork’ is too white to be black, and too black to be white. There’s a great mission ahead of him: he has to fit in the bipolar society of storks.

’black stork, white stork, grey stork’ is a nonverbal, puppet theatre production with physical theatre elements about adaptation, self-recognition, self-acceptance and fitting in for children.
