Bruce Dern plays an elderly man who receives a marketing letter—familiar even in Hungary—claiming he could win one million dollars if he subscribes to a magazine, provided his number is drawn. A heavy drinker, he becomes obsessed with the idea and wants to claim the prize in person, and his son accompanies him. Of course, everyone knows there’s no actual money involved, but the journey is not about that—it’s about love, self-sacrifice, and an exuberant zest for life. Payne’s film, though not perfect, tenderly nurtures and uplifts the human spirit, a true antidote to depression.
