The Children

Lucy Kirkwood’s play is about adults. About two women and a man. Nuclear scientists. Builders of worlds. Parents. It is about long years of work and the well-earned rest that follows - the B side of life. About lives that have found safe harbour and those that have run aground. About yoga and salad. Cigarettes and the edge of the abyss. About a tidal wave. A nuclear disaster. Negligence. Privilege. Ruins left uncleared. Graves unmade - and graves prepared in advance. About responsibility. A sudden visit. A difficult decision. And about the children.

Lucy Kirkwood’s 2016 play tells, with humour and vitality, the story of three people in their sixties - a married couple and their former colleague — whose unexpected reunion takes a surprising turn. It speaks about the generation of parents and grandparents, yet raises its voice for the children, asking in an age of growing environmental disasters: what kind of world are we leaving to them?

The contemporary British playwright’s drama offers a true gift of roles for its three actors, moving from a light, witty beginning to a deeply moving conclusion. The play premiered at London’s renowned Royal Court Theatre before transferring to Broadway, where it received two Tony Award nominations. In 2019, The Guardian named it one of the three best plays of the 21st century.
