Schedule

Jenő Ádám was Kodály's student and perhaps his greatest contemporary admirer, as well as the structurer and developer of his pedagogical method. He was among the first to place pure Hungarian folk songs among the works of the great figures of classical music history: on the stage of the Opera House. Magyar karácsony (Hungarian Christmas) was staged at Christmas 1931 with the theater's greatest singers, conducted by the composer himself. Almost a century later, the OPERA made another attempt to revive the essence of the piece, combining it with Miklós Kocsár's Christmas songs, Ó gyönyörű szép, titokzatos éj (Oh, beautiful, mysterious night), to create an Advent performance that draws on both Hungarian and Opera House history, speaking to the children of today with the participation of our own children's choir singers. Hungarian Christmas truly showcases the figures of the domestic holiday season that originate from folk traditions and, of course, refer to the Bible – from family members to angels and shepherds, from minstrels to soldiers. Of course, well-known Hungarian folk songs such as "Karácsonynak éjszakáján" (On Christmas Night), "Adjon az Úristen" (May God Give) and "Ősszel érik babám" (My Baby Ripens in Autumn) are also performed. The director of the performance is Attila Toronykőy, an expert in children's productions and clean, striking concepts.

Hungarian State Opera

The Hungarian State Opera House is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company, specialising in operas and ballets. The building is one of Budapest's most important 19th century monuments. It was built in neo-Renaissance style according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. The richly decorated interior was designed by renowned Hungarian artists, including Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
