From a young age, we consume narratives of heroic resistance. 'Anything that comes on a horse with a lot of bravery is political.'* We grow up on stories about individuals chosen to fight the oppressor, and in history classes we are taught to remember battles. What we rarely get to explore is resistance as a structure sustained by the often invisible work of building networks, sharing knowledge, gathering resources, and nurturing community โ labor that has historically fallen on marginalized groups.
Because we mostly encounter a masculine model of antifascism throughout our lives, we may end up feeling helpless and overwhelmed by the structures we oppose, without even considering the many ways we might contribute to change. The exhibition explores topics of collective joy and grief, remembering, archiving and knowledge sharing as tools of resistance, and the city as a living and always transforming network, giving space for and taking part in these processes.
Since 1992, UNITED has commemorated November 9th to remember the victims of Kristallnacht and fascism throughout history, while raising awareness about the dangers of nationalism, antisemitism, right-wing extremism, and neo-fascism today.
As we face the rising tide of populism and fear in our world today, this exhibition asks:
Think with us about how resistance thrives not just in the dramatic moments we read about in history books, but in the patient, creative work of building community, sharing knowledge, and caring for one another.
