The turn-of-the-century coffeehouses were not merely places for refreshments—they were vital intellectual communities. The price of a daily coffee served as an entry ticket to the very heart of cultural life. The coffeehouse was the soul of the city, a meeting point for all artists, and it may well have inspired Lajos Tihanyi to create his portrait series featuring remarkable figures from the artistic scene. The cultural and intellectual environment in which the painter grew up was formative: his father, Tihanyi József, was a respected manager of the Balaton Café located at the corner of Rákóczi Road and Szentkirályi Street. At the turn of the century and in the early decades of the 20th century, this exclusive café became a renowned gathering place for notable figures of political and literary life. Its regular patrons included prominent artists such as Ady Endre, Molnár Ferenc, Csáth Géza, Karinthy Frigyes, Kosztolányi Dezső, Szép Ernő, Tersánszky Józsi Jenő, and Herczeg Ferenc.
