Alejandro Jodorowsky's absurdist, hedonistic, tarot-mystic, LSD-influenced mind-bender is virtually unparalleled in the field of surreal, experimental cinema. The director's protagonist, a mysterious alchemist with the secret of eternal existence and the ability to turn metal into gold, is a kind of Christ-like figure who leads his followers and, of course, the enterprising viewer on a pilgrimage towards enlightenment. Nearly two hours of visual mind-altering. Unsurprisingly, even the members of The Beatles were completely turned off by it at the time.
