Young women, a festival director, a sex worker, corporate managers, bankers, cheated-on and cheating husbands and wives. Fourteen ordinary people in all—and from the first scene to the last, drunk in a puddle.
In this uninhibited state they end up in absurd, extreme situations, and have to answer questions they have never asked themselves before.

“Can I love? Why do I live? How can I stop lying? Is there life after death? Why do they say the cat killed my mother? My mother is alive!”
We may have human rights, tolerance, democracy, social institutions—says Viripajev—but do we believe in anything at all? Can we love someone other than ourselves, or only ourselves?
Ivan Viripajev, a contemporary playwright and director, launched the Russian Oxygen art movement. He writes raw reality in a poetic language, placing familiar figures into humor-rich situations. The Drunks is one of his most popular works; it has been translated into many languages and is performed around the world.
