In March, one of the most iconic wines of Hungarian wine culture takes the spotlight: Bikavér. Four leading wineries, two legendary wine regions — Szekszárd and Eger — and an exciting blind tasting finale await wine lovers at Time Out Market Budapest.

Schedule
Why is Bikavér iconic?
Bikavér is more than just a wine — it is the flagship of Hungarian red wine culture. Its story dates back centuries, inspired by the legend of the defenders of Eger Castle, and today it stands as one of the best-known symbols of Hungarian wine worldwide.
What makes it unique is that it is not made from a single grape variety, but from a carefully crafted blend. Its backbone is typically Kékfrankos, complemented by varieties such as Kadarka, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, or Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is a spicy, fruity, complex, and elegant red wine, each winery giving it a distinctive character.
Szekszárd and Eger — one legend, two styles
Bikavér has two iconic homes: Szekszárd and Eger — the same wine style expressed in two different worlds.
Szekszárd Bikavér
– rounder, fruit-forward character
– silky tannins
– warmer, more approachable style
Egri Bikavér
– firmer structure
– spicier, more complex notes
– elegant style shaped by a cooler climate
This duality is what makes Bikavér truly exciting — and something you can experience firsthand during our March tasting evenings.
