Nearly one hundred years old, György Kurtág is not only the most renowned Hungarian contemporary composer, but also a unique figure on the international scene. The genius, who lives in an attic room at the Budapest Music Center, is confined to a wheelchair, yet remains mentally sharp. Making full use of the opportunities provided by the music center, he spends his days tirelessly at work.

The world’s most acclaimed musicians travel from across the globe to visit him, willingly submitting themselves to an emotionally and professionally demanding process that requires extraordinary humility—sometimes spending several hours working on just a few minutes of a single piece.

Silver Bear–winning director Dénes Nagy and his crew offer insight into Kurtág’s life, though the director was far from interested in creating a conventional biographical film. The cameras do not focus solely on the composer at work or among his family. During the multi-year, cross-border shoot, the crew followed not only Kurtág’s immediate surroundings but also visited the Reykjavík home of Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and Halla Oddný Magnúsdottir, as well as the Cornwall seminar of British cellist Steven Isserlis.

Conceived for the cinema screen from the very beginning, this simultaneously grand-scale and deeply intimate documentary allows us to better understand the importance of contemporary art and to experience the constant doubt that torments even the greatest artists.

Bem Cinema

In January 2016, the 108-year-old Bem Cinema will reopen its doors to the public, in a new way never seen before in Hungary: as a cinema of cult and classic films (no harm!), or as the educated French say (if you know your English): as a "repertory cinema".
