Nearly 100-year-old György Kurtág is not only Hungary’s most famous contemporary composer but also a unique international figure. Living in the attic of the Budapest Music Center, the genius is wheelchair-bound yet mentally fully alert. Taking full advantage of the opportunities offered by the music center, his days are relentlessly filled with work. Musicians from all over the world visit him to undergo an emotionally and professionally demanding, deeply humble process, where several hours may be spent on only a few minutes of a single composition.

Award-winning director Dénes Nagy and his team offer an intimate look into Kurtág’s life without aiming for a conventional biographical film. The cameras do not show only the composer at work or with his family. Over years of filming across multiple countries, the crew also visited the homes of Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and Halla Oddný Magnúsdottir in Reykjavik, as well as a seminar of British cellist Steven Isserlis in Cornwall. This cinematic, simultaneously grand and highly intimate documentary allows viewers to better understand the importance of contemporary art and the persistent doubts that torment even the greatest artists.

Bem Cinema

In January 2016, the 108-year-old Bem Cinema will reopen its doors to the public, in a new way never seen before in Hungary: as a cinema of cult and classic films (no harm!), or as the educated French say (if you know your English): as a "repertory cinema".
