1944. In a small pub, the regulars—the clockmaker, the book agent, the carpenter, the photographer, and the innkeeper—discuss everyday matters: how to prepare veal brisket, news about acquaintances, and whether, if they could come back to life after death, they would choose the fate of the wealthy tyrant or the unlucky but honorable servant. Little do they realize that the theoretical questions they raise will become matters of life and death the next day in the torture chambers of the Arrow Cross Party, where their actions will have real consequences.
