Ralph Bakshi: American Pop (1981)
2026-03-09T17:30:00.000Z
Although he caused a scandal in the early ’70s with two of his animated films (Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic), which verge on adults-only fare, Ralph Bakshi remains an unfamiliar name to most people. No question about it, these films are really not meant for children. (Even though they are extremely funny!) And 1981’s American Pop is, likewise, immeasurably far removed from the world of Disney. It can also be construed as a history of 20th-century American popular music, and a shocking family saga at the same time. One can even enjoy it as a historical film, since it unwraps the story of the United States from the various layers of its music. And we haven’t even mentioned the technology used to make the film yet. Which we won't do at the moment as we can discuss the beauties of rotoscoping after the screening.
