Jim Sharman: Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

We have made an exception in this case and will be admitting viewers even if they haven’t brought any rice, candles, newspapers or toilet paper to the screening. In fact, we’ll even let you in without wearing one of the costumes popular among hard-core devotees of The Rocky Horror Show. The musical that inspired the film had already gained its own cult following in theatres as early as 1973. This is a parody that draws its humour from sci-fi and horror films. (We’ll discuss the references in detail later on.) And while it contains an abundance of sexual suggestiveness, none of it is likely to get anyone aroused, as it’s just too funny. The film would be banned everywhere today and could no longer even be made, since every last frame is an affront to ‘good taste’. (Although it’s true that the latter term has lost its meaning, since these days people can be outraged about anything and anyone at any time.) There’s no doubt that half a century ago different winds were blowing. Should we be pleased with our current calm weather?
