Amir is a lonely Iranian drug dealer whose only companion is his dog. The young man deals drugs at night while, like a modern, stoned prophet, he helps his clients in trouble. Amir roams the dark streets of Tehran’s suburbs, rolling joints between jobs to escape reality. During his nightly forays, he is constantly confronted with the glaring contradictions and repulsive hypocrisy of the Islamist regime.
Ali Ahmadzadeh’s free-spirited and daring film reveals a rarely seen, drug-fueled side of the Iranian capital through the character of a perpetually wandering, solitary drug dealer. The crew filmed without permission from Iranian authorities, using guerrilla methods and hidden cameras; subsequently, the state apparatus asked the director to withdraw the film from the competition program at the Locarno Film Festival. "The Limit of Tolerance" ultimately won the festival’s top prize. According to the jury’s statement, the inventive and consistent cinematography, the unique sound design, and the authentic and daring performances successfully draw the viewer into a world full of danger. Ahmadzadeh’s film is a 99-minute manifesto in the spirit of rebellion and freedom.
