1944. In the small tavern, the regulars (the watchmaker, the book agent, the carpenter, the photographer, and the tavern keeper) chat about everyday matters. They discuss how to prepare veal, their acquaintances, and whether, if they could be resurrected after death, they would choose the fate of a wealthy tyrant or that of an unfortunate but honest slave. They have no idea that the very next day, in the Arrow Cross’s torture chambers, they will have to answer for this theoretical question—in practice, through their actions.
