Donnie Darko is at once a comic book, a case study and the most daring venture in American independent filmmaking at the turn of the millennium. It's a wonder-filled, atmospheric piece that tells the story of suburban teen angst in the 1980s with the magical realism of the X-Files.
Kelly begins to juggle normality from the opening scene: the soap-opera Darko family bumps into a pizza order, and soon it's revealed that their middle child Donnie has stopped taking his medication and is receiving messages from outer space. They reconnect with Donnie during the night, which saves him from a jet engine crashing through the ceiling.
The boy drifts deeper and deeper into a spell: he is convinced that in twenty-eight days the world will end...
