Hungarian music literature is about to witness a great moment: in the new season, OPERA will present the first opera by Péter Eötvös written in Hungarian, celebrating the 80th birthday of the world-famous composer in January 2024. The work is a musical theatre adaptation of László Krasznahorkai's novel The Melancholy of Resistance. The story may already be familiar from the film Werckmeister Harmonies, which the composer, of course, approaches from a different angle than Béla Tarr, the film's director, did at the time. "Valuska, a young man with a noble soul, becomes a victim of a manipulative society in the shadow of a stuffed whale", says Péter Eötvös of his thirteenth opera, which have been performed all over the world, many of which have been seen by Hungarian audiences, and even his works The Three Sisters and On Love and Other Demons have been staged at the Opera House.
