Sophie spends her busy weekdays in the hat shop she inherited from her father. At her young age, she can rarely afford to go out for fun in the nearby town, but on one of her outings she meets Howl, the amazingly charming wizard. Misunderstanding their relationship, the envious Witch of the Waste puts a terrible curse on Sophie, turning her into a 90-year-old old woman. Devastated, she flees into the wastes until she stumbles upon Howl's wandering palace. Concealing her identity, she hires herself out as a cleaning lady at the palace. The mysterious and energetic lady soon fills the rooms of the ancient castle with life, inhabited only by Markl, the wizard's fluffy-bearded apprentice, and Calcifer, the fire demon who rules the house. This is the place where Sophie can finally unleash her talents and perform extraordinary miracles. Her story with Howl may be just beginning.
