SYMPOSIUM, HOUSE CONFERENCE

2024-05-17T12:00:00.000Z  -  2024-05-18T14:00:00.000Z

"The leitmotif of Ivan Illich's books in the seventies was the recognition that many institutions had increasingly obviously reached, or even crossed, a threshold beyond which they had become counterproductive, even malign. Beyond a certain volume, Illich argued in Self-limitation, institutions produce as many problems as they seek to solve (...) But worse than that, they obscure, they overshadow the basic human capacity to speak one's own language, for example, to be surprised, or to hear one's own death."

Schedule

The aim of the symposium, organised in the spirit of Ivan Illich, is to review Illich's critical thought in its broad spectrum and to reflect on it in the context of contemporary critical thought and contemporary socio-social phenomena. We wish to emphasize the methodological principle that Illich formulated as "the worst is the worst of the best", i.e. the deterioration of Christianity, i.e. the critical examination of the institution of the Church, can provide a key to the other

of the other social institutions, the school system, health, technology and science, and even the legal system.

and state institutions in the face of the crises and innovations of the digital age

Location

Nyitott Műhely

The Open Workshop is a fine place, a place where many different kinds of people can feel at home, which is to say that there is something that is rare and difficult to create, the spirit of the place. This spirit is very sympathetic to me, because it means both that there are shows that interest me and that the occasional stew is okay. And that I'm likely to meet people there who I'm happy to meet, and it's not even out of the question that they're me. Such public (open) spaces are rare in Budapest.
