Henry Purcell's epochal masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, is linked to the Trojan War, but what is even more important than the historical background in this one-hour gem is love, as Dóra Barta, the director of the performance, points out: 'Mankind has known for a long time that if there is one thing you can die for, it is love. For a long time, love has known that if you can't give up on something, you can't give up on it. The love romance between the queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero, which weaves its way to a tragic end with Virgil, has become one of the founding stories of universal cultural history, but it was the 30-year-old Henry Purcell who, with his music, launched his heroes into the stars, where they have shone with a light that never fades for three and a half centuries."
Hungarian State Opera
The Hungarian State Opera House is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company, specialising in operas and ballets. The building is one of Budapest's most important 19th century monuments. It was built in neo-Renaissance style according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. The richly decorated interior was designed by renowned Hungarian artists, including Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
