"János Hunyadi became a bell tolling for the world, Mátyás Hunyadi became a fabulous Renaissance statue of justice - László Hunyadi "only" became an opera. An opera, which is essentially about his brother, the last great Hungarian king, or at least about the antecedents of his reign. Yet our present effort is not aimed at "resurrecting" László, who became the tragic prelude, the reason and the explanation for the accession of Mátyás Hunyadi to the throne. True, now, for the first time in almost ninety years, the original score, which is being re-recorded, offers a great opportunity to hear the voice of the young executed warrior. László Hunyadi's ancestral scot is a treasure trove, but not everything fits in the pockets. Everything from Ferenc Erkel, of course, except what he himself drew. But a decision must be made at the text stage: instead of Béni Egressy's wavering and in many places outdated phrases, we choose reworked versions without allowing the drama to fade or shrink. Our present production is intended to stage a period piece from a higher perspective and to showcase the artistic and technical potential of the newly opened Opera House. Because there is only one opening opera premiere," says the opera's director, Szilveszter Ókovács.

The performance of the work is based on the score published by the Hungarian Music History Department of the Institute of Musicology of the Centre for the Study of the Humanities as part of the series of critical publications of Ferenc Erkel operas.
