We welcome all Lantos Ferenc (1929-2014) Lantos. The Infinity of the Circle (curator: Dr. Flóra Mészáros) at Zsdrál Art Gallery, Balatonfüred, on 13 April 2024 at 5 pm!

Speech by Dr. Flóra Mészáros, curator of the exhibition

LANTOS. THE INFINITY OF THE CIRCLE

Zsdrál Art's exhibition Lantos: The Infinity of the Circle will be a professionally conceived exhibition of the artist, curated by Dr. Flóra Mészáros, who will explore the circle, the key motif of Lantos' work and his naturalistic concept. For while Lantos' American contemporaries, in the fresh spirit of pop art and geometric abstraction, exploit the possibilities of the circle, or Western geometric painters link the circle with the phenomenon of illusion, he achieved an international standard with his art in the 1960s in the closed socialist spirit, without knowing the parallel patterns. Lantos' international, pioneering role culminates in the circle-based visual order he created.

Schedule

The exhibition focuses on Lantos' entire oeuvre (with a particular emphasis on his most important periods, the 1960s-1970s), and organises it into thematic units based on the curator's variations on the circle motif. Thus, he presents the circle as a motif in nature (the circle as a celestial body, a shape found in flowers), its purely geometric use or as a tool for mathematical processes, an example of the transition between the non-figurative and the figurative world (the circle in the tulip works) and its use in different genres. The exhibition also includes a wide range of techniques used by Lantos, including oil and water paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, enamels and even a complete series of building friezes. Exclusively for the exhibition, the curator's land art installation (a natural installation of tulip works on artificial turf) aims to evoke Lantos' work in the Tettye Park, which he believes made the artist the first Hungarian exponent of the land art genre.

The exhibition is also a visual unfolding of the main chapter of the recently published monograph on Lantos (published by Zsdrál Art, authored and edited by Flóra Mészáros), entitled The Infinity of the Circle. At the same time, the exhibition presents a never-before-seen ensemble of artworks, with lenders including the gallery's own works and a prestigious private collection from Pécs, the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs, the Budapest-A. Gyűjtemény, the Hatvani M. Collection in Budapest and the ifj. Ferenc Ficzek's collection. The special exhibition thus explores Lantos' basic motif through more than fifty works.

The exhibition is open until 28 April 2024.
