Sometime in the distant past, at the dawn of humanity, thanks to an encounter with the strange black monolith, ape-men discover fire and the use of tools. Millennia later, American researchers find a similar column on the Moon, broadcasting a mysterious radio signal to Jupiter. A space expedition sets out to investigate who the message might be for.
