Ádám Boruzs: Signal Threshold

In information theory, a signal threshold refers to the reference value that determines whether an incoming impulse is detected by a system as interpretable information or remains unnoticed as part of the background noise. Building on this concept, the exhibition focuses on the uncertain boundary at which something emerges from the background and becomes meaningful to us.

The starting point for Ádám Boruzs’s paintings lies in waveforms and various data-based structures. At first glance, these forms may resemble diagrams or measurement results, however, the works do not depict specific scientific phenomena. Once transferred into the medium of painting, their original function recedes into the background, while their original structure remains present.

Different waveforms and systems are layered over one another, intersecting, partially obscuring, and transforming each other. At a certain point, it is no longer clear whether what we see is still the original signal, its distortion, or a newly emerging pattern. It is precisely this uncertain transition that the exhibition explores, the boundary where data becomes image, signal becomes pattern, and information becomes sensory experience. Rather than offering definitive answers, the paintings create visual situations in which the viewer also takes part in the construction of meaning.

For the artist, noise is not merely an error or a disturbing factor. New relationships and structures can emerge from disorder, what interrupts one piece of information may simultaneously become the condition for something else to appear. Signal and noise are therefore not opposing concepts, but states that continuously shape one another.

In his works, Ádám Boruzs is not seeking to answer the question of what a particular signal means, but rather how something becomes the carrier of meaning for us. Where does the boundary lie between data and image, system and pattern, information and perception? And what happens to a signal when we no longer know its source, yet still attempt to read it?
