Hirajama works in Tokyo, cleaning washrooms during his work. The man is apparently satisfied with his simple life, filled with harmonious monotony, and finds joy in the small wonders of life. He devotes his free time to his passion for music and books, and is also fond of trees, which he takes care of with fear and takes pictures of all the time. Through a series of unexpected encounters, more and more of his past is gradually revealed.
Wim Wenders' work was presented in the competition program of the Cannes Film Festival, where his main character, Jakuso Kódzi, was awarded the award for best actor. The film also won the Ecumenical Jury Prize.
