The disclosure of agent files is necessary for a society to confront its own past. But what happens when that past suddenly becomes personal?

How can we come to terms with it if it turns out that a relative, friend, or beloved and respected role model of ours collaborated with state security as an informant? How do we deal with the circumstances of their recruitment, the coercion, the decisions, and their consequences? Where does the line between personal and social responsibility lie?

Making the files public can help a society see its own past more clearly, but it also inevitably brings conflicts to the surface. Family histories may be rewritten, the image of role models may change, and long-standing silences may be broken. How can we confront all of this in a way that ensures the process of uncovering the truth does not merely lead to accusations and stigmatization?
