A world-famous masterpiece from the golden age of Japanese cinema.
This cruel horror story, illustrating the dehumanizing effects of war, is set in the Middle Ages, during a time of civil strife. A young woman left to fend for herself and her mother-in-law make a living by killing samurai and stealing their valuables. The beautiful young woman falls in love with a deserter, thereby incurring her mother-in-law’s hatred and jealousy.
The ruthless, dispassionate portrayal of a subhuman existence is intertwined with naturalism, mysticism, and eroticism.
