Loosely adapted from English author Martin Amis’s 2014 novel, the film tells the story of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Höss and his wife, Hedwig, who built their dream home right next to the concentration camp. The constant screams of the prisoners, the gunshots, and the smoke from the gas chambers haunt their paradise, but their indifference to these horrors creates a terrifying and ominous contrast. The new film from the director of The Sexy Beast, Birth, and Under the Surface is austere and full of challenges.
