Friedrich Barnabás // One Million Cubic Meters of Sludge

Friedrich Barnabás’s second solo exhibition appears at first glance to differ greatly from his previous one, in which he used irony and the material culture surrounding us to reflect on contemporary Hungary and the recent decades of Eastern Europe. Yet the new paintings remain deeply connected to his earlier works, as the starting point is once again identity — this time in a more personal and localized sense. In this new series, Friedrich condenses the post-socialist history of his hometown, Ajka.

Schedule

The paintings draw from the traditions of Romantic landscape painting. However, instead of portraying the overwhelming, sublime force of nature, these works evoke the downfall of a former industrial town through one of the most devastating ecological disasters in recent Hungarian history: the red sludge catastrophe.
