BLUE PELICAN

(Pelikan Blue - in Hungarian with English subtitles)

color, Hungarian, animated documentary, with English subtitles, 79’, 2024

directed by László Csáki

***Not recommended for viewers under 16.***

Blue Pelican is the first feature-length animated film to evoke Hungary’s recent history with wry humor and documentary techniques.

This hand-drawn animated film is crafted with artistic sophistication in the style of American indie films. The euphoria of freedom in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and the atmosphere of anticipation surrounding the transition to democracy, are brought to life in László Csáki’s animation, characterized by its wry humor and a powerful, distinctive visual style.

For years, the director conducted interviews with people whose lives were profoundly changed by international journeys undertaken with forged train tickets written in blue Pelikan indigo ink.

The film is a true journey down memory lane, featuring period music such as “Induljon a banzáj!” by Bonanza Banzai, “Lidocain” by Hiperkarma, and “Húsrágó hídverő” by Kispál és a Borz.
