Andy Sheppard’s career took off with unprecedented speed: he took the stage for the first time barely three weeks after picking up the saxophone, and a few years later he was already touring Europe’s jazz clubs and concert halls. In the early ’80s, he moved to Paris, where he worked within the French avant-garde and improvisational music scene; upon returning to England, he shot to fame with the release of his first solo album. The album *Andy Sheppard*—which featured Randy Brecker and Steve Swallow—immediately propelled him to the forefront of the international jazz scene, and within a short time, he won the British Jazz Awards for “Best Newcomer” and then “Best Instrumentalist.”

Throughout his career, his recordings have been released by labels such as ECM, Blue Note, and Verve. His sound is instantly recognizable for its lyricism and extraordinary musicality. Over the course of his career, he has become one of jazz’s most open-minded artists: in his music, the American jazz tradition, European chamber music, minimalism, and contemporary improvisation blend together with effortless naturalness. His playing is characterized by a unique sensitivity to melody and a profound ability to create atmosphere. As both a tenor and soprano saxophonist, he possesses a unique voice, and his concerts function simultaneously as intense improvisational dialogues and meditative musical journeys. His ECM albums—including *Surrounded by Sea* and *Trio Libero*—are now considered definitive recordings of modern jazz.
Rita Marcotulli is not only one of the best-known pianists in Italian jazz but also an artist of international stature who, throughout her career, has collaborated with numerous legendary musicians—from Chet Baker and Joe Henderson to Joe Lovano—while the Swedish bassist, Anders Jormin is one of the most influential European musicians in improvisational music, whose instrumental technique and compositional style have become defining references for generations.
The October 17 concert in Budapest marks a rare domestic performance by one of the genre’s most important artists, promising at once refined chamber music articulation, free improvisation, and extraordinary energy.
