Frankie (Ariella Mastroianni) is a young mother who suffers from a rare condition: she is unable to perceive the passage of time properly. To help her make sense of the world, she records her thoughts on life – which she must live out of sequence – onto cassette tapes. After being sacked from her job, a mysterious woman entrusts her with a seemingly simple task. However, this assignment holds unexpected and dangerous twists in store for the woman struggling with her perception of time.
Ryan J. Sloan’s stunning debut film premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. This auteur thriller, brimming with palpable tension, follows in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan’s time-juggling crime films (Memento, Insomnia) and the neo-noir films of the 1990s. Cinematographer Matheus Bastos shot the film on 16mm celluloid; his grainy images and the wind-instrument-dominated score create a unique atmosphere, whilst Ariella Mastroianni, who co-wrote the screenplay, captivates and unsettles with her unadorned performance.
