Naked Lines - aqb Project Space
Naked Lines presents the diverse drawing practices of ten contemporary Hungarian artists, exploring drawing as a preliminary stage of a work in progress, an independent artwork, a visual record, or an experimental space. The exhibition examines the role drawing can play in artistic thinking: from the beginning of a process to the finished work, and from a quick note to an independent space for thought.

Schedule
The group of ten Hungarian contemporary artists includes practitioners working with painting, installation art, animation, and traditional graphic techniques. A significant part of their work emerges through processes that are carefully considered, planned in multiple stages, and consciously constructed. Yet behind these highly precise, often premeditated and controlled intuitive processes, there are usually preparatory studies, visual footnotes, and sensory traces that take shape on paper. Sometimes these merely indicate the atmosphere of a work in progress; at other times, they record a specific thought, a compositional possibility, or a feeling that is difficult to put into words. This led to the question of how much more a professionally executed, monumental painting adapted to a museum scale and technically refined to the extreme can express than a visceral scribble that one might originally make simply as a reminder to oneself. Can honesty be intensified through reduction? At times, perhaps it is precisely the unfinished quality that becomes one of the most precise forms of communication. The practices of the selected artists do not necessarily describe a shared artistic condition or stage of life. Artistic activity means something different to each of them, and drawing occupies a different position within each practice. For some, it is the precursor to a work in progress; for others, it is an autonomous artwork, a visual note, an experiment, or a means of quickly capturing a thought. The visual languages of the individual artists differ, yet overlaps can emerge between them—not necessarily through similar genre conventions or technical solutions, but through a comparable intensity of visual thinking. The exhibition therefore does not seek to define a single concept of drawing, nor does it claim that drawing is inherently more direct or honest than a finished artwork. Rather, it explores the different positions the same medium can occupy within diverse artistic practices: it can be the beginning or the conclusion of a process, a preliminary image or a final work, a quick note or an autonomous space for thought. The works of the ten artists should therefore not necessarily be understood through a shared aesthetic or common artistic concern. The common ground is drawing itself—and the changing role it assumes within artistic thinking.
