The Miles Davis 100 Tribute Quintet was formed to mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary trumpeter’s birth. The ensemble not only pays tribute to one of jazz’s greatest innovators, but also reinterprets his legacy from a new perspective: the production centres on a contemporary, European interpretation of Miles Davis’s body of work. The five exceptional musicians who make up the band reflect, through their own artistic language, on material drawn from various periods of the Davis repertoire, placing great emphasis on collective improvisation, open forms and a contemporary sound. The end result, rather than being a reconstruction, reinterprets and keeps alive the trumpeter’s legacy within the context of contemporary European jazz. The Miles Davis 100 Tribute Quintet’s performance is thus, on the one hand, a tribute and, on the other, an attempt to engage in a dialogue with the past using the language of the present.
