Director: Fernando Meirelles

***Not recommended for viewers under 18.***

The story unfolds on the impoverished streets of a Rio de Janeiro slum. It traces the paths of two boys who take divergent routes over a period of 15 years, from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. One becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer. Through a series of short vignettes, the film depicts their life journeys, revealing the trajectories of lives that are often cut tragically short. The protagonist of *City of God* is not a person, but a place. *City of God* is a housing project built for the poor starting in the 1960s; by the early 1980s, it had become one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.
