About the Exhibition:
The exhibition presents the life’s work of Noémi Ferenczy Award-winning textile artist Margit Kányási Holb (1950–2025) , a Noémi Ferenczy Prize-winning textile artist, and is part of MODEM’s tradition of periodically spotlighting the work of outstanding artists with ties to Debrecen—including István Burai, Zoltán Fátyol, Márton Szipál, and István Tamus. The exhibition explores Margit Kányási Holb’s career by presenting the creative process through which textiles step out of the realm of utilitarian objects and become carriers and transmitters of physical presence and spiritual experience.
The beginning of Margit Kányási Holb’s career coincided with the development of the Velem Textile Art Creative Workshop, which was launched in 1975. Rather than a functional approach, the workshop prioritized experimentation and the exploration of spatial, conceptual, and installation-based possibilities, playing a significant role in the renewal of Hungarian textile art.
It was within this context that Margit Kányási Holb’s distinctive artistic language took shape: she developed a unique weaving technique while linking the knowledge she gained through craft practices to the questions raised by contemporary art. In her works, textiles gradually transcend the confines of their use as utilitarian objects and become independent works of art in which the gestures of covering and revealing, tying and untying, are not merely technical solutions but also reflections of the works’ conceptual and emotional layers.
The intellectual milieu of the artist’s family plays an important role in interpreting her body of work. Traces of the artist’s shared thinking with her husband, visual artist Zoltán Fátyol, explore the possibilities of art’s role as a spiritual mediator, while her works created with their child, Viola Fátyol, a Capa Grand Prize-winning photographer, open up new perspectives on the interplay between media and the visual representation of memory.

With one of the best infrastructural conditions in East-Central-Europe, the MODEM is to be an essential part not only of the visual art scene but the whole cultural sphere. The art center is suitable to represent that the culture has high priority for the institutes and the whole town. Therefore, one of our basic goals is to make the MODEM a wider intellectual space and forum to where not only the spectators but also the artists return regularly with pleasure.
The primary point of view of the MODEM is the reconstruction of its character in the Hungarian art life, with the cooperation with new elements which strengthen the relation with the local and regional community as well as with the broader international cultural scene in a longer term perspective and form and run a multilevel and manifold network. We aim to create a brand new narrative which change the public opinion about the role of the contemporary art and make the visual art the part of the everyday life. An important goal of our programme is to represent the diversity of the contemporary art and to display the attendant art in different forms. In the selection of thematic exhibitions, not only the visual art gets into focus but the architecture and social science as well.
The Antal‒Lusztig Collection also plays a major role in the MODEM’s life, since it is permanent part of the ground floor exhibition room. The items of the collection are presented by newly arranged exhibitions twice a year. Furthermore, the professional and accurate cataloguing of the collection has started simultaneously as well.
