Cynthia is a working woman in her fifties, her life a series of disappointments. He lives with his street sweeper daughter Roxanne in suburban London. The woman has a younger brother, whom she raised as her own child after their mother's death. Maurice became a successful photographer, living in one of the upscale neighborhoods with his wife, and not having met his brother in years. One day, Cynthia receives a phone call from a woman named Hortense, claiming to be her daughter, whom she had unseen given to foster care and now wants to meet her.
